the Soque River - Sections & Tributaries

The Soque River watershed is much more than the mainstream Soque River. In fact, water quality in the mainstream is primarily a product of hundreds of small streams that make up distinct sub-basins defined by the tributaries below.

The Soque River watershed has seven sub-basins described below from headwaters to mouth.

Beaverdam Creek
This tributary drains the lower Soque and is representative of a Piedmont drainage. Sand and silt are common throughout this sub-basin.
The creek forms the boundary between Clarkesville Elementary School’s soccer fields and the Habersham Electric Membership Cooperative (HEMC) facility. Highway 115 to Cleveland crosses Beaverdam at this location.

Deep Creek
Deep Creek is the largest tributary north of Clarkesville.
The headwaters of Deep Creek begin at the Orchard Golf community off of New Liberty Road.  The river flows in a westerly direction and joins the Soque River just above the Clarkesville Water Treatment Plant.

Hazel Creek
This lower Soque tributary drains the southeastern portion of Habersham County.  It is the largest sub-basin and tributary to the Soque and drains a vast area between Highway 17, Dicks Hill Parkway, Highway 105 and Business 441.  The Hazel Creek sub-basin is the most populated portion of the Soque Watershed and drains all of Demorest, a portion of Cornelia and half of Mount Airy.

Headwaters
The headwaters of the Soque occur north of Batesville general store.
The headwaters include the area drained by Tray Mountain and Goshen Valley and are made up of Baker's Branch, Wolfpen Branch, and the Left and Right Forks of the Soque.  The official beginning of the Soque River is formed when the right and left forks converge just above Highway 197.

Raper Creek
Raper Creek is an upper Soque tributary that drains the northeastern portion of the Soque Watershed.  A portion of this tributary flows through the Chattahoochee National Forest.  Chastain Branch and Moates Branch feed Raper.  It joins with Oakey/Goldmine Creek to enter the Soque along Highway 197.

More Details

Shoal Creek
Shoal Creek is an upper Soque tributary that drains high ridgelines within the Chattahoochee National Forest. Nerve Branch runs along Oakey Mountain Road, while Alley Creek enters Shoal Creek near New Liberty Road.  Shoal Creek joins the main stem of the Soque just above where Shoal Creek Road meets Highway 197.  Shoal Creek Road is one of the most scenic in Habersham County.

More Details

Yellowbank Creek

The Yellowbank Creek sub-basin is in the lower, western part of the Soque watershed.  The creek parallels Fred Pitts Road and merges with the river below where the creek crosses Highway 115 and upstream of where the Soque crosses Highway 105.
