the Soque River
FAUNA
The land within the
Soque River watershed ranges from the steep Appalachian mountain slopes to
broad bottoms and hillsides. The natural landscape offers forests,
riparian areas, ponds, a river, tributaries and wetlands. Such a range of
habitats allows for abundant wildlife in the watershed.
Here we provide some information regarding those creatures and pictures
taken by wildlife enthusiasts.

The Soque River Watershed is
located in Habersham County in northeast Georgia, and flows entirely
within the county boundaries. The Soque is the northeastern most tributary
to the Chattahoochee River and is considered a headwater stream that
delivers a significant volume of water to Lake Lanier which provides
drinking water to the 4.5 million people in Atlanta.
HABERSHAM COUNTY
Founded in 1818
following the cession of Cherokee Lands, Habersham County is the county
from which parts of Rabun, White and Lumpkin were formed. Habersham is
the only county in the state of Georgia to completely contain its primary
watershed, the Soque River, from headwaters to mouth, affording the county
a unique opportunity to control the future of its heart river HISTORY
How does one write the history of a river?
On this page, we begin to give you a sense of the Soque River and its
watershed through the writings of John Kollock. As time goes by
(Dare we call it history?) we hope to add to the breadth and depth of the
Soque's history. RECREATION
The Soque River and
its watershed is a great place for a variety of outdoor activities. One
of the challenges faced by citizens that want access to the river, though,
is that much of the land alongside the river is privately owned. The SRWA
offers a guide to recreating in the watershed in ways that are open to the
public and preserve the river and private property rights
SECTIONS
& TRIBUTARIES

Soque
River.
In fact, water quality in the mainstream is primarily a product of
hundreds of small streams that make up distinct sub-basins defined by the
tributaries. The Soque River watershed has seven sub-basins from
headwaters to mouth.
