Hiking & Walking
The land within the watershed is beautiful and expansive.  Hiking and walking opportunities are as varied as the landscape.  Approximately 17,524 acres or 17% of the Soque River Watershed rests within the Chattahoochee National Forest, providing tremendous recreational opportunities.  Almost all of these National Forest lands are within the headwaters of the Soque Watershed. Though some of these areas are commonly known and easy to find, most are remote and challenging.

  • Appalachian Trail:  See Tray Mountain.

  • Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest:  If you can get to it, you can hike through it.  Try these sub-basins:  Deep Creek, Headwaters, Raper Creek, Shoal Creek.  www.fs.fed.us/conf/

  • Clarkesville Greenway Trails Project:  The Greenway, a five mile loop around Clarksville, will protect greenspace, provide an alternate transportation route, and enhance the city's beauty.  Parts of it will run along the Soque River.  Contact Clarkesville City Hall for more information.  706/754-4216

  • N.E. Georgia Mountain Hiking Club:  An active social group welcoming all levels of hikers, the NEGMHC meets at 7:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month at the Clarkesville Public Library.  Contact Beckie Hilton at 706/717-8210 or at beckiehilton469@alltel.net.
