The Adopt-A-Road is a litter prevention program now sponsored by the Soque River Watershed Association (starting in July 2012) with support from the Habersham County Road Department. There are currently 22 sections of adopted roads in Habersham County. The goal of the program is to engage public involvement in picking up litter along Habersham County roadways. By having the community assume responsibility for our public right-of-ways we hope to reduce litter before it happens.

YOU TOO can adopt a road!
It's simple. Any civic-minded organizations or individuals, such as garden clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church groups, school clubs, businesses or business associations, and families can adopt a stretch of roadway. First, check to see if another group has adopted the section of road you may be interested in. Then just give the SRWA a call at 706-754-9382 or send an e-mail to soque@windstream.net and we'll send you the application materials.

HUGE THANKS TO ALL THOSE INDIVIDUALS and ORGANIZATIONS who have adopted a road to keep clean! Click on the markers above to see who is helping keep our County Roads clean. If you're interested in volunteering to help on an existing Adopted Road let us know and we may be able to connect you with existing volunteers.

Help us update your information. If you are a current Adopt-A-Road participant to insure correct contact information and your road location and let us know if there are any changes that need to be made. Send to srwa@windstream.net

What are the Adoption Responsibilities?
By adopting a section of roadway you and your organization commit to controlling litter on the right of way by:
  1. Organizing at least 3 cleanups per year (or as needed) to insure an attractive appearance to your adopted roadway.
  2. Coordinate volunteers who may be interested in that section of roadway to assist with the cleanup and care.
  3. Report cleanup results to the SRWA (including approximate weights) so that we can track progress in litter prevention.

What does the SRWA and their Keep Habersham Beautiful program provide?
  1. We'll post a Keep Habersham Beautiful sign and the name of the sponsoring organization or family at a point along your roadway (thanks to the County Road Department for help installing signs). These signs help raise awareness of litter prevention efforts in our community.
  2. The SRWA can furnish supplies when necessary to help your cleanups (we often receive donations of garbage bags, rubber gloves, and bottled water for volunteers).
  3. Once a year we’ll submit a Press Release that recognizes all the volunteer organizations and individuals who Adopt-a-Road and report on the amount of trash they’ve picked up that year.
  4. We’ll help you communicate your cleanup days if you need additional volunteers (through our websites, community calendar, etc) and publicize successes on our website, Facebook and other outlets.
When you adopt-a-road you are making a personal difference in the quality of life in Habersham County. For more detailed information on this project contact us at 706-754-9382 or srwa@windstream.net.
